We are delighted to congratulate Professor Emeritus Phil Harris on his election as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) as part of the Academy’s autumn 2026 cohort.

This prestigious recognition is awarded to leading social scientists who have made outstanding contributions to their field and to society. Professor Harris’s election acknowledges his distinguished career in marketing and public affairs and his significant impact on research, policy and practice at both national and international levels.

Dr Kirstie Simpson, Interim Executive Dean of Science, Business and Enterprise, said:

“Professor Harris’s election to the Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship is a richly deserved recognition of his exceptional contribution to scholarship, leadership and public engagement. We are proud to celebrate this achievement and the continued impact of his work.”

The Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship comprises more than 1,750 leading social scientists from academia, the public sector, industry and civil society, all recognised for excellence in their discipline and their contribution to social science for public benefit.

Professor Emeritus Phil Harris , said: “It is a very kind honour of my national and international peers to award me a Fellowship of the Academy of Social Science this September. It is in particular recognition of my work in understanding Lobbying, Political Marketing and sound policymaking for the public good which my colleagues in Chester, Manchester, and Otago, New Zealand have given me great support to conduct.”

* In 1970, a young Phil Harris was tapped on the shoulder by his employer and sent somewhere unexpected – Moray Sea School, the Scottish counterpart of Outward Bound Aberdyfi at the time.

In the latest episode of the Outward Bound and Me podcast, Phil talks through the career that followed – spanning universities, boardrooms and continents.

He said: “It gave people depth to do something else – and at different times you don’t know that you need that depth.”
